Once a Stranger
"Once a Stranger" is a podcast about me, Alec, and my extended community. Through different chapters in my life, I have been fortunate to meet every day people with extraordinary stories. They are connected through time and place, and their fascination with music, race, education, sports, parenting, activism, travel, etc. I have always been moved by peoples origin stories and how their life trajectories are shaped. My superpower has been my ability to disarm people just enough to unearth some of these phenomenal stories. Some people experience me as nosey, but many others awaken at the opportunity to share about themselves. I have made some life decisions that have supported my ability to connect with people in daring and tender ways. Moving countries and states, parenting, teaching, being a recovering Facebook addict, throwing house parties, organizing, and playing sports have all been ripe spaces for facilitating these relationships. For 40 years, I have fine tuned my practice, and it has left me with a diverse and endless roster of courageous, talented, hilarious, and creative folks.Think "Humans of New York" meets "This American Life" meets Princes' "Let's Go Crazy".

In the 6th episode of the "Once a Stranger" podcast, Alec's guest is SABA (and Shawna). SABA is an Arrow Soul artist who lives at the intersection of hip-hop and his indigenous cultural birth rite. The two discuss the trauma associated with his early boarding school memories and the colonization of his native lands, and how those experiences shaped his love for different resistance movements. Listen to how SABA and his family have influenced a cultural revolution across the country armed with a spray paint can and a screen printer. Buy his dope art at Sabahut.com.
